Marin Cilic defeated Giovanni Lapentti 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to give host Croatia a 2-0 lead over Ecuador in the first round of Davis Cup. Ivo Karlovic beat Lapentti's older brother Nicolas 6-2, 5-7, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4. The ninth-ranked Cilic dominated the first two sets, losing only three points on serve.
